Yes! I’m not dead, haha.

As some of you already knew, I was hired by FAKKU as editor some months ago, and now I’m proud to announce the first book working for them, Leopard’s Ecchi Sketch:

It’s been a hard work, doing every single sound effect, every moan, and ensuring the highest quality possible, but I’m really proud to be sending books all the way to the printers having started translating as a fan less than two years ago.

PSS: I didn’t forget about my ongoing projects, Kimi ga haramu is about to be finished thanks to a kind redittor who is helping me wrapping it up, and I’m looking for people to edit Loli Check. Expect them as soon as they’re completely done. :>

Greetings.

I’ve wanted to compile a list on good lolicon manga titles and the time has come. All these are full manga volumes (~200 pages), no doujinshis. They’re all fully translated to english as well.

Please don’t ask “why is XXXXX not included?” >_>, either I haven’t read it or I didn’t like it enough to include it in the list.

Also, yes, there are a few I’ve translated myself, it’s not a shameless plug, if I translate something it’s because I truly think it’s good. The ones included here are -or at least I think so- my best works 🙂

Rant about the font Wild Words, and about why you shouldn’t abuse using Wild Words if you’re a scanlator

Public lynching is not my kind of thing but I felt it was necessary this time. The font Wild Words is spreading like gunpowder, at this point, Wild Words is the new Comic Sans in the scanlation world, everybody uses it, most use it in unappropriated situations and it’s becoming the de facto font for manga translations.

Everybody knows about Comic Sans, and the public hatred of Comic Sans around the internet, and this hatred, independently of the aesthetic and technical aspects is for two reasons. The first one is Comic Sans is a default font in Windows systems since a lot of years ago, helping the spread, the other is people used to like this “child-handwrite” font, and they’ve been using it for completely unappropriated contexts. I’ve received e-mails from my doctor written in comic sans… Did he pretend to be funny and trendy? Sorry but it’s not an appropriate font for something serious.

In manga translation, and more particularly in H manga the problem is a little more subtle, but the problem is actually the same with Wild Words. You can see this font used in all kind of contexts, when the original artist in Japanese made the effort of changing fonts to express different kinds of tones. Wild words is a regular dialogue font, and it looks bad in:

  • Thoughts. Sometimes it’s not clear by the bubble shape if certain text is a thought or dialogue, and using the same font in both deepens the confusion.thougts
  • Narrator text. The same font as in thoughts are often used for this one, and that’s way better.narrator
  • “Sexy” text. You know, sometimes things are said in a completely different tone, and the font changes accordingly, if you keep the same boring dialogue font it looks monotone.sexy
  • Moans. This one irks me particularly, the epitome of laziness.

When new blood starts to scanlate they use to follow some external help (namely online tutorials) and they use to suggest you which fonts to use. I declare myself guilty in that aspect, I followed the deceased typesetting tutorial from Red Hawk and at the end they recommended using CC Astro City as primary font, and Augie as “handwritten” font, and so I did.

However that lasted for a couple of volumes, once I got sick of my edits looking generic I started to try other fonts, to the point of changing my complete fontset for each volume, experimentation was really fun. Some of those choices were bad looking back, like Anime Ace (which is pretty much the same as Wild Words) in Misao’s tankoubon, or some other cases. But it’s still a small price to evolve as typesetter.

And a last reason would be giving personality to your edits. Most of us do this scanlation work for pleasure, and in some occasions you may get attached to certain characters, certain stories… and that makes you want to make it feel personal.

I’m pretty sure a lot of people, especially scanlators, recognize who translated these two excerpts at first sight, a personal fontset feels comfortable and recognizable from others, and achieving that is a good enough reason to risk trying non-generic fonts.

As scanlator, you are not going to create something recognizable at first sight using the same tools literally everyone else uses. To do so, please don’t use Wild words like it’s some kind of all-purpose holy grail, and using it “because it looks good enough” leaves no room to improvement, in order to achieve a higher standard you need to evolve from the unwritten rules.

Typesetting is an art, and you don’t make art doing the same thing everybody does over and over.

The first number of “Towako”, the new magazine by Akaneshinsha, the same company that brings you Comic LO, Comic Koh, Girls for M, Juicy, etc.

If all the Akaneshinsha magazines are centered around one topic (Lo – Juicy – Koh -> grade – middle – high school), this one is no different, and the topics is quite odd, loli hags, in fact, you can see on the top right corner and the spine cover ロリババー専門誌 “Magazine specialized in loli-babas” (baba -> grandma). Either old fox goddesses with loli body or 3000 years old loli vampires, this magazine seeks to fill the gap of people wanting somehow legal lolis :p

On the sad news part, the guys at Mikocon said they weren’t able to get a copy of the magazine, so  there won’t be good scans unless some other scanner does it. In the meantime you guys will have to be satisfied with the poorly scanned digital raw :c.

Kinda off-off-topic, but there were a couple of color pages not present in the digital, and one of them announced a new artbook by Takamichi (Comic lo cover artist, but you knew that already, right? ( ¬‿¬)) with his cover illustrations.

The first number of Comic ExE magazine and the first (and only so far ;_;) volume of Kimi wa Midara na Boku no Joou.

About Comic Exe… This is the first number of this new bi-monthly magazine. And what a first number! It has over 600 pages, weights more than 1kg and has a lot of good and well-known artists, such as Takayaki, Henreader, Distance, Gomennasai… Can you see the pattern? All these artists and many more use to publish under Wani Magazine’s seal, and this one is published by GOT (Comic Anthurium, Comic Grape…). Around the internet there are rumors about how a few artists are displeased with Wani Magazine´s policies and they have chosen to go to another company.

If that exodus is something temporary or definitive is something we’ll have to see after a few numbers… In the meantime Gomennasai has his first tankoubon announced under GOT, having published just one story in GOT’s magazines, so they must have bought the licenses from Wani. Good luck with ExE, GOT! 😀

Kimi wa Midara na Boku no Joou (You Are Obscene, My Queen) is a Manga by Okamoto Lynn (Elfen Lied, Gokukoku no Brynhildr) and Yokoyari Mengo (Retort Pouch, Kuzu no Honkai, this last one will have an anime next year) from 2012. It’s in hiatus since forever if we exclude a single chapter published last year and I wouldn’t recommend if you don’t want an acute case of plot blueballing, if you don’t mind, go ahead, but caution, it’s lewd as fuck :p

A study on Noise’s loli habits

I was talking the other day with Freudia from Team Koinaka about the amount of moans in hentai manga and how interesting would be to count them all and extract a Moan to Dialogue Ratio (MDR for short), I think that would be a really representative meter for an artist’s page composition. For example this tank we’re doing right now from Shouji Ayumu has a really high MDR and that makes me really lazy to edit >.>

While the calculation of MDR would be a significant effort and I’m way too lazy to count moans, I remembered how Noise did in his last compilation volume a chart about the number of girls wearing glasses in the hardcover

“Concerning the Matter of the Abnormally Rapid Development of Girls Who Wear Short Pants” Hardcover, translated by 5.a.m., go read it!

This was really interesting too, but in my opinion, not the most interesting data in Noise’s tanks. Some people are complaining about how often Noise is doing stories depicting oppai lolis (or must I say udder lolis?) to the point he’s getting extremely repetitive, hell, I was the first one who complained about it, I said something along the lines of “I don’t understand why Comic LO editors let him do those lolis, they would fit better into Tenma or Koh.” But, are there that many oppai lolis? Let’s have a look.

Noise has been doing oppai lolis since day one and since the last 2 tanks the amount went from a few to almost half the girls.

Some other people say the repetitive theme is short pants + oppai, not only oppai. Well, the titles of the last two volumes are “The neighbor girls are wearing short pants and I’m getting turned on” and “Concerning the Matter of the Abnormally Rapid Development of Girls Who Wear Short Pants”, makes sense. However, as one should expect, this restrictive condition makes the numbers like a smaller version of only short pants.

If we forget about oppai and check only the short pants the statistic gets a little crazy. There is a huge rise of short pants in kinjo no ko.

We can see here how oppai lolis haven’t really risen too much, they are actually being more frequent slowly in the last years, while short pants are the actual repetitive theme in Noise’s late choices.

We’ll see next tank,but I have the feeling I’ve seen a lot of Noise udder lolis in the lasts LO issues. In the next volume compilation we’ll see if the tendency is still slowly growing in oppai while short pants remain in a really high ceiling.

Edit july 2016: I just added the statistics of Noise’s last completed work, Short Pants to Iroiro. The trend went this time full short pants, scoring a whopping 100%
